The Bolton News recently published an article containing the hidden facts about McFly leaving their label. Read up to know! With two number one albums and seven number one singles, McFly could be forgiven for sitting back and raking in the money. After all, no one in the band is older than 23, and they've already sold millions worldwide.
So fans had something of a shock when it was announced less than a fortnight ago that the band were to part ways with Island Records and set up by themselves.
"It's a bit mad," says singer and guitarist Danny Jones. "We just had the chance to do it. It gives us the option to control our masters and stuff and a bit more control over what we can do to please the fans, so we thought we'll try and do it our own way and see how it works."
Bolton-born Danny joined fellow bandmates Tom Fletcher, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd in 2004 to form the band, and their debut album and single both shot to the top of the charts.
But in recent years, Danny says the band feel they have hit a glass ceiling at Island, and so Super Records was born.
"We just want to progress and get bigger and we didn't feel like we could when we were stuck to the same old record label that weren't really as excited about it as we were," he says.
"We believed in it more than everyone else, obviously, so we just wanted to do it for ourselves. It was a scary decision, but a lot of the positives were good positives. There are some negatives, but as Richard Branson says, screw it, let's do it', so we did it. That's what it says in Richard Branson's book."
Business language comes up a lot in conversation with Danny, and you get the feeling that the band are working hard to prove that they are grown ups. Even their cooking skills were on show recently, when they appeared on an episode of Gordon Ramsay's The F Word.' And Danny admits that they would never have been in the position they are now had the record label not helped them make so much money in the first place.
"We're absolutely privileged," he says. "What we've done is got our money that we've made from McFly and invested it into Super Records, which is our label, and then got the team around, our press team, radio team, all these freelance people who are great. If bands can afford to do it, and want to put their money into it and are brave enough to do it then they should."
"Every businessman has been skint one day of their life - you've got to invest to make money."
And although he can't see himself suited and booted in a boardroom ("I don't want to be one of them guys"), Danny says they are considering signing more bands to Super Records - in a few years' time.
Until then, however, they have a new album to promote. With recording completed - they flew to Australia to get some inspiration - the boys are just waiting to hear the finished product.
"It was amazing actually, we got just to clear our heads, no pressure, no deadlines," says Danny. "We made the album we wanted to make and hopefully the fans will enjoy it just as much as we did making it."
"It's more unfiltered, just from us to the fans. We've always been writing songs like this but there have been decision made down the line that we've not always been comfortable with, maybe. It's nice not to have that. We believe it's the best album we've ever made, definitely."
One For The Radio made its debut on Radio One's Switch. Last June 7, the band added the song to their profile.
